Nonetheless, this is a welcome offering from a singer who does have a truly unique style. But apart from that, it is difficult not to treat the latter five as a grab-bag of varied quality. The first five tracks build up a sense of urgency and poignancy. Her songs feel sharper than they have in a long time: the textures are glassier, the. There is a pattern of quality amongst the songs here. Dark Sky Island is Enyas first album in five years, and its her best since 1995s The Memory of Trees. The Dark Sky Island album title alludes to dark and mysterious journeys which are all on display in each track. The soundscapes and imagery produced are about journeys and travel and intergalactic ones at that.

Then of course, there is Enya's voice, still soaring, but all of a sudden it seems to have found a new sense of maturity – notes that once drifted away are hit perfectly. Enya's last couple of albums had found her in a musical rut, the same arrangements and whisper-thin vocals, and to be fair, some of that still remains, but those traits have been toned down – there is a different orchestration with pizzicato strings, timpani and some thought-provoking piano interludes. Not expecting much, I found myself enchanted with music I long thought out-of-date.
